Helen awoke the next morning and while she lay still in bed listening to Cass breathe she closed her eyes and felt the moment. They had been together over eighteen years, and even after all of that time, she loved waking up next to Cass. Their bodies fit perfectly together, and when they lay like this, every bad thing in the world ceased to exist. Helen had read an article a long time ago that stated if a person put any part of their body in water it slowed their heart rate and lowered their blood pressure. That’s what these moments felt like; Cass was her water—needed for every facet of existence. In the last two years, this very act of holding one another while they slept had become a rarity, and on this gray, stormy morning, she made a silent vow to herself never to take this for granted again.

As if hearing Helen’s thoughts, Cass’s arm tightened around her waist and Helen felt Cass begin to wake. She rolled over so they were face to face and Cass’s eyes fluttered open.

“Hi” she smiled shyly.

That melted Helen’s heart—the fact that after years and years, these small moments of intimacy still made Cass shy. For all of her onstage bravado and dance club swagger, Cass wasn’t a person who ever slept with people she didn’t love. Before Helen, there had been only two other girlfriends. Ironically, Helen was a one-night-only person until she met Cass. Despite or because of her shyness and trust issues, Helen had a strict, ‘no dating—it’s only sex’ rule until the night she saw Cass on stage. It took her months of chasing and convincing Cass that she wouldn’t break her heart. Helen smiled at the memory of the entire band and Claire cornering her in one of the dressing rooms, without Cass there, to grill her to find out what her intentions were toward their beloved Cass. They also made it very clear that if this ended badly, Helen would be answering to every single one of them.

“What’re you smiling about?” Cass asked sleepily, wrapping her arms around Helen and nuzzling the soft spot at her neck. Cass smiled at the groan she heard rumble low in Helen’s throat. Pulling Cass closer, Helen feathered kisses up and down Cass’s shoulders and neck, knowing how ticklish Cass was, until she heard her giggle and pull away. She smiled playfully at Cass.

“You are so beautiful.”

Cass looked down and didn’t reply. Helen reached up and lifted her chin. “I wish you saw yourself the way I see you or, hell, how half the world sees you, for that matter.”

Cass never thought of herself as beautiful, and she gave her standard reply, “As long as you think so.”

Helen kissed her nose. “Good morning.”

“Good morning.”

They stayed face to face holding one another for many long minutes when Helen finally said, “Want me to draw you a bath?”

“No, I want to wash my hair. I think I’ll shower.” She rolled away and got out of her side of the bed.
